Plugging Wells in the Deep Fork National Wildlife Federation

As reported by Dan Arthur – ALL Consulting

Nothing EVER stays the same and change is constant! Sometimes the River changes pathways and wells that used to be on dry land are now in water! Looking at plugging wells in the Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge with the Well Done Foundation can sometimes get complicated when after a century of change, they end up in the middle of a river! Preparation, planning, and considering all the options (pros and cons) can get complicated. And sometimes you have to get out there and see things up close! It may be odd to say, but it’s almost like this is just another day in the life! No, it’s not a well in St. Mary’s Lake in Ohio or in the Arkansas River in Tulsa or even Marina Del Rey (California), but sometimes these projects can get complicated! From access to having little in the way of records on the well in question to dealing with one of the wettest years in a couple decades! Still… Addressing these issues is such a passion for so many that it warms my heart!

We say all the time that accessing these orphan oil & gas wells in a National Wildlife Refuge can often times be more work than plugging the well itself. After surveying the best access corridors and receiving the approvals to move our equipment into an out of the well locations, in many cases we place ground covering mats to protect the natural resources and route our trails to steer clear of critical habitat areas.

For all of us working as a team towards a common goal, the experiences gained along the way, are just as, or even more, important than actually reaching the location itself. It provides the opportunity for collaboration and creativity with some truly amazing people, in an extra special place, as highlighted by these photos of one of our next upcoming projects.

Our goal here ultimately is get this important work done safely and efficiently, and to leave as small of a footprint as possible hashtag#onewellatatime !
